Jules Verne's Works
Uniform Edition
/ Uniform Binding
Charles Scribner's Sons
New York

This "set" of books was published over a long period of time by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. The publication and reprinting dates of these books, with the date clearly indicated on the title page, ranges from 1886 to 1917.

The set is generally known as the "Uniform Edition". The series title is printed at the top of the title page on "most" but not "all" volumes. The ads for this set that appears in the front of some of the books, also uses the words "in uniform binding". The common colour for this set is Red but there are volumes known in a Brown colour. (The Brown edition is printed on thicker paper, so the volume is thicker than its Red counterparts)
The covers of the Uniform Edition, have scroll work and the Title of the volume in Black, while the spines have scroll work in black, and the title of the volume in Gilt along with an image related to the story, in gilt.

Red 1908 Hector Servadac Brown 1886 Hector Servadac
From the above images, you can tell that the Brown 1886 edition is printed on thicker paper, as the spine on the brown edition, shows the Black border around the image on the spine, while on the thinner 1908 Red edition, the Black border, though present, is in the fold leading to the cover!

Originally the set consisted of 9 volumes:
Uniform Illustrated Edition
identified on some title pages as Uniform Edition.
- Michael Strogoff; or, The Courier of the Czar
- A Floating City and The Blockade Runners
- Hector Servadac
- Dick Sands
- A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
- From the Earth to the Moon Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours, Twenty Minutes; and a Journey Around It
- The Steam House. Part I. The Demon of Cawnport. Part II. Tigers and Traitors. Complete in one vol.
- The Giant Raft. Part I. Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon. Part II. The Cryptogram. Complete in one vol.
- The Mysterious Island. Vol. I. Dropped From the Clouds. Vol. II.Abandoned. Vol. III. The Secret of the Island. The Complete work in one vol., with 150 illustrations

Individual volumes were priced at $2.00 except Mysterious Island which cost $2.50, OR Price per set, in a box $17.50. (ed: a savings of $1.00 over the individual price!)

9 Volume ad

Later the series was expanded to include 12 Volumes.
Listed in the book ads as Jules Verne's Works. in uniform binding.
but still identified on some title pages as Uniform Edition.
- Michael Strogoff; or, The Courier of the Czar
- A Floating City and The Blockade Runners
- Hector Servadac
- Dick Sands
- A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
- The Mysterious Island. Vol. I. Dropped From the Clouds. Vol. II.Abandoned. Vol. III. The Secret of the Island. The Complete work in one vol., with 150 illustrations

The Exploration of the World (in 3 volumes)
- I. Famous Travels and Travellers
- II. The Great Navigators
- III. The Explorers of the Nineteenth Century

Individual volumes were priced at $2.00 and $2.50, or first 9 volumes in a box for $17.50 and last 3 volumes in a box for $7.50

12 Volume ad

AND Later yet, the series was expanded again to include 14 volumes:
Still identified in the book ads as Jules Verne's Works. in uniform binding.
but still identified on some title pages as Uniform Edition.
The 2 new titles added to make 14 volumes were:
- Around the World in 80 Days
- 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Individual volumes were priced at $2.00 and $2.50, or first 11 volumes in a box for $21.50 and last 3 volumes in a box for $7.50

14 Volume ad

As indicated earlier, the titles in the Uniform Edition were published and reprinted over many years in the same Red (and Brown) cloth from 1886 to 1917, so it is easy to complete a set that can have a wide range of dates.
ed: For instance, my Uniform set of 14 volumes, has dates that range from 1902 to 1909, and I have an individual volume of Mysterious Island with the date 1886 !

This table shows the known dates for Uniform Edition volumes.
- additionally, a U, indicates that the words "Uniform Edition" DOES appear at the top of the Title page
and NoU, indicates that the words "Uniform Edition" do NOT appear at the top of the Title page.
and a blank indicates that I do NOT know if "Uniform Edition" appears!

It is interesting to note that there are some difference between the titles for different dates.

- Journey to the Centre of the Earth ,1886, does say Uniform Edition at the top of the title page, yet the 1908 edition does not. In addition the Title has been reformatted:

1886 Journey 1908 Journey

- The 1886 edition of Dick Sands, is the only edition of Dick Sands in the Uniform Edition to include a map of West Coast of Central Africa inserted before chapter 1. It is NOT listed in the Illustration index.
MORE importantly, collector Brian Kutzera observes that the Scribner1st US edition of Dick Sands does NOT include this map, so the 1886 Uniform Edition of Dick Sands MAY be the only US edition to include the West Coast of Central Africa map!

- The Scroll work at the top of the spine, can be different on different titles, or different on different years of same title
There is a line that goes through the Scroll and you can identify the different scrolls by
A) Hi-Low-Hi or B) Low-Hi-Low

You could notice that the difference in the scroll is a 180 degree rotation!

- The Scroll at the top of the Cover can ALSO be different, and like the spine scroll, the difference is essentially a 180 degree rotation

Cover top scroll - Regular (Hector Servadac - 1908)

Cover top scroll - Reverse (Twenty Thousand - 1909)

When the cover scroll is put together with the appropriate spine scroll, it forms a continuous scroll

Or a Disjoint Scroll when NOT matched

ed: Around the World, and 20,000 Leagues were the last 2 books to be added to the Uniform Edition. Almost an after thought! It appears that this addition came in the early 1900's and I would consider these "weakest" of the sets volumes, in the sense that they only contain 12 illustrations each.

* Important Note:
There is an 1886 edition in Red, that has a map titled: West Coast of Central Africa!
The fold out map of Africa is right before the 1st page of Chapter 1 text.
This is odd because the Scribners 1st US edition of this title does not have a map.  Neither does the Uniform Edition of 1893 or 1908.
The map IS in the Sampson Low 1st edition.

Is the 1886 Uniform edition of Dick Sands the only US edition with the map?
