This is a Who's Who in the world of Jules Verne.
The foundation for this page is a listing of the characters from Jules Verne's novels, stories and plays. This is a work in progress, and there are many gaps at the moment (April 2004 - still a work in progress) The listing of characters includes the characters name, the title of
the book, and a description. As this page evolves, the description will
be enlarged, and where possible an image of the person will be included,
from the original Hetzel publication illustrations.
The next stage of this Jules Verne "Dictionary" will be to include people from Jules Verne's life, including his relatives. The final stage of this Who's Who listing, will be the inclusion of the names of notable Jules Verne authorities, researchers, and collectors. This last stage may be a while in coming, but I hope you will keep checking in for progress on this veritable "Who's Who, in the world of Jules Verne" |

Leviathan IV (ship) | Paris in the 20th Century | ship docked at the Port de Grenelle
Description: "...recently docked gigantic Leviathan IV; the last century's Great Eastern would not have been worthy to be her launch; her home berth was New York, and the Americans could boast of having defeated the British; the ship had thirty masts and fifteen chimneys; of her thirty thousand horsepower, twenty thousand was for the drive wheels and ten thousand for the propeller; railroad tracks made it possible to circulate swiftly from one end of her decks to the other, and in the space between the masts could be admired several squares planted with huge trees, whose shade spread over flowerbeds and lawns; here the elegant passengers could ride horseback down winding bridle paths; soil spread to a depth of three meters over the main deck had produced these floating parks. This ship was a world, and her crossings achieved prodigious results; she came from New York to Southampton in three days; sixty-one meters wide, her length may be judged by the following fact: when Leviathan IV docked prow foremost at the quay, rear-deck passengers still had to walk a quarter of a league before they reached terra firma..." |
